SceneSource Status

Posted by on Sep 10th, 2010, at 6:24 am in Site Stuff.

Hiya, sorry for the amount of non scene related posts recently but the site has been going through some significant changes and i thought we would bring you up to speed!

Well first and foremost i think the most obvious thing is the recent addition of ads. In the two and a half years we have been running scnsrc we have kept the site clean of ads but as we grew in popularity, donations were few and far between and the site costs rose higher and higher the day when we would need to make more money than what we could pay out of our own pocket was seemingly inevitable. So the choice was either shutdown scnsrc or run advertisements. We started scnsrc because we were sick and tired of other rls blogs overkill with ads, that were either malware, pornographic or just plain annoying. Although we have finally had to embrace advertisements we are still committed to our core principles of no annoying ads, no malware, no scams, no pornography, to keep them as minimal as possible and to keep them relevant to our users. We don’t profit from this site in fact quite the opposite it is loss generating and has been for over 2 years. All we hope these ads can do is break us even, no more no less. As can be seen now on the site our first affiliation is with Leechpack.com, It’s a really great service that should interest a lot of you, if you like what you see please try them out!

Moving on a bit to more exciting news, that we hit over 60k unique users on Monday. More specifically 63,184 unique hits, making it our highest ever! We now regularly get between 50,000 to 60,000 unique hits a day. Something we could never of dreamed of when we first started out 2 long years ago. Last month we recorded  446,936 unique hits and 4,535,463 total page views! Since we started recoding our hits in Feb ’09 we have had   43,838,065 total page views and 4,394,726 unique hits! I know its clichéd but really none of this would of been possible without you guys, without you we are nothing. Thank you so much we hope we can continue to grow and continue to provide you with the latest and greatest scene news!

Below are some pics of our analytics, thought some of you might be interested in them

In duller news our Twitter feed is down at the moment due to Twitter deciding to change the way it authorizes web applications, buggering our plugin. So until that gets fixed it will remain down. sadface. Still you can follow us using our RSS feed, become BFF’s on our facebook page, chat to us on IRC and drop us an email! Still plenty of ways to stay in the loop and get in touch! If you have an suggestions or anything please dont hesitate to get in touch.

As for the fate of dup3.me and trac3.me. They are still going to be down a while longer as we figure out how best to bring them back online. Unfortuantly we have no estimated time scale for this. Just sit tight. 🙂

Anyway since im starting to go on a bit i will finish by again saying a massive thanks to everyone out there who has supported us! You should see a few new features in the future! See yah next time.

Congratulation on the milestone. I do not mind Ads as long as they don’t involve “0Sec PUT YO PHONE NUMBA HERE SO I CAN LET YOU INTO THE SITE LOL” shit.

  2. 2. DJ Sep 10th, 2010 at 5:57 am

The Twitter Tools thing is really easy to fix, update the plugin & follow the instructions. You have to make an app through your Twitter account, sounds hard but it’s really not. Make sure you’re logged into the twitter account for the site first. It’s seriously just a lot of copy & pasting.

  4. 4. shin Sep 10th, 2010 at 6:15 am

Well ads, why not ?! I’ll even disable adblock on scnsrc as I do for all the little websites I like and would like to support. Congrats and keep up the good work !

  5. 5. tkylv Sep 10th, 2010 at 6:16 am

Love the site and really appreciate all the work you guys put into it! Thanks for not weighing the site down with pop-ups and porn ads.

I think I can speak for all casual users in saying we really appreciate what you’re doing and we have tremendous respect for the sacrifices you’re making in highlighting both non-scene and scene releases.

Ads are nearly ubiquitous and I for one do not view their presence as a detriment.

keep up the good work all!!

i appreciate this site above all other rls sites because of the quality indie type films you put up….not just bullshit tv and software i will never use

    please keep it up!

  11. 11. monkey Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:05 am

Ads are fine with me just no malware, sound, or auto expanding ads.

  12. 12. Fail Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:08 am

The ads are not fine, we have no desire to pay your bills, give us releases or don’t, we don’t care.. you’re not unique.

  13. 13. shiny (much love) Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:25 am

To bad you feel that way, feel free to find another site that better caters for your wishes. Cunts are not unique either. 🙂

  14. 14. joma Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:32 am

Ads are okay, just as long it will go away when you close’em or won’t lock-up your browser like irfee with 20,000 pop-ups.

  15. 15. Fail Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:48 am

@shiny, how would you know? the only cunt you’ve experienced is your mothers.. at birth.

So what? you guy didn’t initially realize that hosting a website costs money? why do we now have to pay for your past mistakes.. suppose prostitution didn’t occur to you guys as an better solution?

Don’t shit us, especially considering you guys often “brag” about being “ad free”, was even a banner advertising that for a considerable amount of time.

Sell outs, and I hardly believe anyone uses this site elusively, so I have no problem going elsewhere, I’m already elsewhere.

I do believe you guys suck panda cock.

  16. 16. Hippopotamus Sep 10th, 2010 at 9:50 am

Ads are fine. You guys deserve some revenue. Your site is nice and clean. If fuckwitts don’t appreciate it that or that you don’t want to be paying for the privilege of running the site… who cares. Your core users come here cos it’s nice and clean. So long as you keep it that way. I for one have a very happy home here. Cheers guys (and gals) for all your hard work!

  17. 17. sooperman Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:01 am

would rather have ads and this site than no ads and no scnsrc.
just dont go down the road of that shithole that has popups and page hijacks
all the best keep up the good work.
and you may not be unique but at least you are honest

  19. 19. Mr. I'm about to own this noob known as Fail Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:10 am

    @Fail

Tell me, what is your idea of a good blog on this scale? Any other site you go to will have ads, most likely none will be as discreet as the ads on ScnSrc, and a good amount of those ads will be either pornographic, pop ups, or redirects; the kind no one likes.

I know first hand what running web sites costs, and 4,535,463 pageviews per month burn bandwith like crazy, not to mention the much needed hardware resources. Now you might say, they just want to profit. Even if that’s the case, who cares. We all want to make money in one way or the other, and while it’s very possible that the admins make next to nothing on these ads (that is, excluding the server costs), with the time and sweat they put in, they deserve it. Sure, I could go elsewhere. I could not even use a blog, but FTP is too ugly, and torrent sites get spammed with all kinds of releases I don’t particularly care too much for.

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
    No money, no SceneSource.

  20. 20. Rich L Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:16 am

You guys are great. I followed you all here from that “other” site because I could no longer browse it due to their ads etc etc. I feel its great that you have the decency to explain yourself to your visitors. Few sites would do that and I commend you. Keep up the good work!

  21. 21. tohm Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:18 am

no problem! just dont do a zerosec and sell the site!! 😀

  22. 22. shiny (much love) Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:41 am

    @fail
Well we always knew we would have to be ad supported one day if the site got popular enough which now it has. I’m not forcing you to visit so im doing nothing to “shit” on you.

And yes we did “brag” but we don’t anymore hence your use of past tense.

And now im bored talking to a cunt and a troll, but the two are probably mutually exclusive.

anyway thanks please never visit again and enjoy that wonderful new site of yours. 🙂

  23. 23. matt Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:57 am

Great work keep it up! A few adds don’t hurt anything as long as you keep them clean and steer clear of the annoying type. IE: Popups, loud ones and any of course that contain scripts.

  24. 24. BrandO Sep 10th, 2010 at 11:10 am

I can’t go a day without you guys. I am you’re bitch and will do as you please.

    On a real note.
Great work guys. You all do an amazing job. Best to luck to you all and scnsrc in the future.

  25. 25. Scope Sep 10th, 2010 at 11:25 am

Hey guys, really understand it but find it soooo ironic that you had to do it because traffic increased because rls log was down. All the very best, great site and really do understand that you had to do it as your costs went up. Bandwidth ain’t cheap.

Wow that’s alot of page views would be interested to know what your setup is cause you guys have kept this site nice and snapy.
Seriously having sponsors isn’t anything to be ashamed of but i like the honesty.
As long as they stay unintrusive … Actually i use add blocks so i don’t care lol.
    Much love.

  29. 29. bitmask Sep 10th, 2010 at 12:48 pm

I just checked out LeechPack, which I’ve never heard of and you know I might actually sign up as torrents destroy your network (especially if you use VoIP) so I’d rather have a single tcp connection than hundreds.

On another site note: I’ve been wondering what happened to your mvidz and music packs that Jochar and FatSlave used to post?

Ok boys and girls, I’m drunk which probably doesnt help with either spelling, nor being unbiassed.

Anyways I have some but’s to some of your comments.

First of all I want to thank to all of those who actually do appreciate our “job” here at ScnSrc. If you havent noticed some of us have been contributing for years (I’m on the site since Feb so not that long…) and we didnt have even a penny for that. I am aware of trolling side of Interwebz, and I know what some people will never be happy with FREE content they get, but nonetheless it’s not the best feeling to read those words…

Like I said earlier 95% of comments we get from you guys, here or on IRC (where I encourage you to come !! 🙂 ) are worth as much as real money, I am genuinely happy to read a comment from you guys under my post nad I would wish to read them more and more.
Not just links to the release, just remember – 60 K uniques will read your comment on show/game/movie and you asewell can have influence on other peoples taste’s likes etc. IMO thats encouraging enough to actually take those few seconds of your lifes and write a comment – share with us !:)

I’m not even gonna comment on “fail” coz his nick is enough trollwise…

Umm what more – some of you may think that with having this ads from LeechPack we are making shitloadz of moneyz – trugh is their input hekped us very much into further improving of the site. With current hardware/bw setup we can only handle so many uniques – we need to upgrade server/connection etc – I get it you wanted to have a ad free site – but after 2 years of constant paying for servers Im not surprised op’s wanted to get some help from other comapnies…

I can assure you we will NEVER put malware/infected/bogus/hack ads on our site – we are not RlsShit nor ZeroShit 😉 As shiny said – we will try to keep them as minimal and as much site content connected as possible.

I think Ive covered all of your earlier questions/uncertanieties if you have anymore questions please chare with us. Ill be happy to get any response 🙂

Kisses and Hugs from .pl 😉

i don’t care if u add ads. i’ll still visit the site for scene news. u know what i like about this site? it’s purely scene!!!!!! oh yeah!!!

thank u so much for being a scene only site…

    btw, i still wouldn’t care if u add pop-up ads…

as if that’s uncommon to the other sites i visit…

and also, long live scnsrc and their scene only policy!!!

    now bring back dup3.me. hehe

one more thing guys, can u add a “disable ps3” option?

it really hurts me that the ps3 is now hacked. huhu

    For what it’s worth:

    – I don’t mind seeing minimal, non-intrusive ads at all, and definitely see the need for it from your perspective

    – You guys provide a great service and have a responsive, helpful & friendly staff

    – Keep up the good work 🙂

@34 “n/a”. I’m not a games player, and have no use for any further software, but the scroll-wheel of your mouse, or arrow keys on your keyboard, can achieve wonders. Just watch those unappealing potential downloads whizz by! ;o)

Whats the non “gay” alternative for scnsrc? There must be one? Once I thought this tie would be the shit but no, it’s not the shit. In fact, it’s the shit.

  40. 40. Owii Sep 10th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

normally i hate US-Sites in Germany our sites are bigger and better … eg Serienjunkies.org you look for lost? season 1-x … all there all online … u look for a japan tv show … u find it there … 10 year old tv show … u will fin it there … all online 😉

i only use US-Sites becouse i get my tv shows here ~24 hours and scnscr is the only good site i know 😀

But advertising is fine for me 😉

to be honest ive only just found this site in the past month and to be honest its probly one of the best rls sites out there. i dont mind ads aslong as they aint the full pages ones they do my head in. keep up the hard work your doing great

  47. 47. Fanboi Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:37 pm

This is the first site i open in the morning, to see what new, and not so new, stuff and news has happened since last morning. And this is the only release site i use, becouse i like it very much. If you need ads to keep it running, then so be it. As long as the ads dont get annyoingly huge or whatever. I also remember when (and why) this site started, and i dont think it was fail, rather the opposite. Keep up the good work dudes.

  48. 48. buschwusch Sep 10th, 2010 at 10:56 pm

You’re damned if you don’t and you’re damned if you do, but at the end of the day, we all have to make sacrifices to pay the bills. If that means adverts to get some revenue in, then that’s what you have to do. We can all bleat and cry about it but lets be honest we are not paying anything to help run it.

It’s your site, run it how you see fit. Ads won’t deter me from visiting since you guys are usually the first people to have TV shows up 5 minutes after it aired. Just don’t be surprised if you lose some traffic either. People tend to vote by not coming back. Keep up the good work and thanks for the site.

  52. 52. Bignified Sep 11th, 2010 at 3:35 am

No disrespect intended, but your numbers probably spiked in Aug/Sep cause Really-Annoying-Ad-Log was down the whole time, more or less. But it doesn’t matter, as your site does get a jump on movies and tv shows that your competition is too lazy to post quickly. For that, much thanks! I just have one question, do the LeechPack guys know how to spell? Get You Account For Free! Get You SpellCheck!
