Many of you recall our old predb, DUP3.me. Due to previous admin’s incompetence in regard to security, some rather mad sceners decided they would compromise the servers. We then imagined an amusing project would be to rebuild the predb bigger and better than before (and completely from scratch), and thus PreDB.me exists, though we apologize for taking our sweet time.

This time around, it’s filled with 4.2 million+ releases, 3.4 million more than before. The up time should be decent and soon there will be more redundancy to help prevent gaps in the database and missing releases. Our pre sources are fast and consistent, but we may choose to use public pre sources as a redundancy if anything falls through. Additionally, the database has scraped data (ratings, images, blurbs) for movies and tv shows, from tvrage, imdb and wikipedia.

The site is quite interactive so you should not have javascript or cookies disabled. We will not track you or store any of your data.  There are quite a few filtering features briefly documented here to allow you to narrow down your searches or to build custom listings. Currently searching’s functionality and ease of use could be much improved which will come later on. If you would like to give feedback or let us know about bugs you can visit this page or just comment below. You must also note that foreign releases are by default filtered out of the front page and single category pages. When you use the search bar, they’re included, but you may filter it out by adding tag:-foreign to your searches.

You may switch between light and dark schemes by clicking the light bulb icon below the logo, at the top left of the page, and clicking the gear icon will open the options window where you will be able to customize quite a few things (more options soon, suggestions welcome). For now, you may use the custom search link functionality – it’s rather self explanatory.

More features will be coming soon, including: Archives (searching by date), relative popularity scores, top 10 pages, compact view, more user settings and easier term including/excluding.

We’re not including NFO’s at this time, though that could change.

We have been contemplating quite a few new additions to the site and community. These include (not in order):

• A forum (Likely small)
• Getting the predb back up
• Top 10 most popular posts per [insert timeframe here]
• All categories being filterable
• Our own image host including optimized images throughout
• Various optimizations, as always

^ None of the above is set in stone exactly; but we’re working towards it all in a semi-intelligent fashion .

Since the last time we put this post up, we received quite a few great applications and we have added quite a few promising staff; but we’re looking for more; our thirst must be quenched! Read more below…

Requirements:

It’s imperative that you have a strong grasp of the written English language, as you will be communicating with fellow staff and the readers. You will also need to join the IRC network [irc.link-net.org] to keep up to date with fellow staff.

The job

As much as we would like to we can’t pay you. Scene Source doesn’t make that kind of scratch beyond server costs! We mostly do it for “the lulz”.

Working at Scene Source means you will be using WordPress and our web apps (to make it easier) to post new releases to the website. This entails googling for information, links to websites (IMDB, Metacritics, Wikipedia etc.). Compiling sample pictures/videos, an NFO and other release related information as you see in the posts you read now. We do not upload releases; the websites main goal is the sharing of information. We will be happy to teach you how everything works, so don’t worry about that.

Comment filters are now working on the default theme; Shadowness as it has been a well received feature .

In addition; Starsauce has gained better Infinite Scroll functionality with “AutoScroll”. Switching this off and on results in automatic next-page load (As per some readers request). Javascript required, obviously. Enjoy!!

P.S. Infinite Scroll is delayed on Shadowness until we’re sure it will not spike server load.

I’ve added some functionality to allow filtering of comments (Requires JavasScript). You may view a split view, links only, normal comments only and all comments (default/the way it has always been). Your preferences are saved. My hope is that it may allow users to more easily speak their minds without the fear of being buried into oblivion. At the moment it’s only functioning in the theme “Starsauce” (Click to change theme or check in sidebar). Let us know what you think and/or give us some suggestions for any other features in the comments.

P.S. Try hovering over sample image links in movie posts.
P.P.S I’ll also add that if these addons are well recieved on this theme it should likely be ported to the others.

“Starsauce” is the inspired name of the theme.

I made this basic javascript/php stylesheet switcher – so at the top right of the header you can select either the default style, “Dark” or the secondary style, “Bright” and it will load the style without a page reload and of course save your preference. The theme is compatible with all modern browsers and even Internet Explorer,  due to the incorporation of this script. Change the theme in the sidebar or click on the image above .

Well first and foremost i think the most obvious thing is the recent addition of ads. In the two and a half years we have been running scnsrc we have kept the site clean of ads but as we grew in popularity, donations were few and far between and the site costs rose higher and higher the day when we would need to make more money than what we could pay out of our own pocket was seemingly inevitable. So the choice was either shutdown scnsrc or run advertisements. We started scnsrc because we were sick and tired of other rls blogs overkill with ads, that were either malware, pornographic or just plain annoying. Although we have finally had to embrace advertisements we are still committed to our core principles of no annoying ads, no malware, no scams, no pornography, to keep them as minimal as possible and to keep them relevant to our users. We don’t profit from this site in fact quite the opposite it is loss generating and has been for over 2 years. All we hope these ads can do is break us even, no more no less. As can be seen now on the site our first affiliation is with Leechpack.com, It’s a really great service that should interest a lot of you, if you like what you see please try them out!

Moving on a bit to more exciting news, that we hit over 60k unique users on Monday. More specifically 63,184 unique hits, making it our highest ever! We now regularly get between 50,000 to 60,000 unique hits a day. Something we could never of dreamed of when we first started out 2 long years ago. Last month we recorded  446,936 unique hits and 4,535,463 total page views! Since we started recoding our hits in Feb ’09 we have had   43,838,065 total page views and 4,394,726 unique hits! I know its clichéd but really none of this would of been possible without you guys, without you we are nothing. Thank you so much we hope we can continue to grow and continue to provide you with the latest and greatest scene news!

In duller news our Twitter feed is down at the moment due to Twitter deciding to change the way it authorizes web applications, buggering our plugin. Still plenty of ways to stay in the loop and get in touch! If you have an suggestions or anything please dont hesitate to get in touch.

As for the fate of dup3.me and trac3.me. They are still going to be down a while longer as we figure out how best to bring them back online. Unfortuantly we have no estimated time scale for this. Just sit tight.

Finally, after our little bit of an attempt at some hype (lol) we’ve decided to roll out our new server, and what better time then to push out SceneSource v2. This is the culmination of a lot of hardwork from NuZZ and Shadowized, as well as some coding by myself and some images courtesy of shiny. We have heard your requests, and while we aren’t going to bring you uploads in posts any time soon, we have added some of the more requested features. Below you will find some more details regarding the new features of v2, as well as the awesome themes NuZZ and Shadow have designed.

Firstly I guess I should say a little about the server. We’ve finally gone all out and gone for a quad core, 8gb RAM. This (we hope) will see us through the foreseeable future, until the time when we need to upgrade again, in which case we would probably be looking at 2 servers by then (expensive slightly…). Anyway, this new server should be a lot faster then the old, especially during peak times when TV is pre’ing and the site would die completely.

Shadowness

Shadowness is our attempt at bringing the flavour of SceneSource’s original theme that has been with us for over 2 years, to the design and feel of this theme. Many elements stay the same, including the sidebar down the right, a navigation bar across the top, and search in the top right. What we have added is some extra width, allowing us to use larger images and more space while writing. Formatting of the posts has altered slightly as well, with the number of comments appearing above the content of the post, rather then below as per version 1. This theme is the new default SceneSource theme, and should been nicknamed “sloth”.

Greysauce

You will find that Greysauce is slightly brighter than the old theme. At the bottom of the page you will notice an experimental “Load more” button. This should (With the help of a plugin called Infiscroll) load the next page underneath the last. It may not be for everyone.

In this theme the tables and blockquotes have been styled with indentation to make such content inside them contrast better.

Dark Greysauce

Dark Greysauce is simply a few shades darker than Greysauce with greater contrast.

Note: The Greysauce theme(s) will not render properly in Internet Explorer. This is because I was too lazy to code for its failing and decided to stick with the modern browsers. It will, however, work with IE9 when that is released, in the future. The theme Shadowness works in all browsers.

Filter Categories

Of course we have heard your cries for a No-TV filter that would exclude these from your front page. Your prayers have been answered, because not only do we give you a No-TV filter, there’s also a No-MP3 filter that will hide these posts when you have zero interest in them! Simply click the designated button and poof! they’re gone.

Theme Switcher

You might think this new theme is super awesome, but there’s more! You can easily change themes by selecting the one you like in the Theme Switcher box to the right. This way you always have SceneSource exactly the way you like it!

Obviously, like any new thing we bring to you guys, its not perfect straight off the bat. Do bare with us while we get through our teething stages, as we will endeavor to resolve and bugs and or problems ASAP. We also encourage commenting on this post if you find any bugs, errors or glitches around the place. We don’t know until people let us know about them. Hope you enjoy these new features as much as we are looking forward to providing them for you.

Over here at SceneSource we’ll never have that problem, as we don’t require ads to maintain our site, nor do we plan on selling out to mysterious owners… ever. We were the original site formed by two former rlslog editors who had enough of Martin and his ads, as well as his lack of care for rlslog. We founded SceneSource as a homage to what rlslog should of been. So from all of us at SceneSource, we’d like to say welcome, we hope you enjoy your stay and that you will find a new home with us.

I’d also like to point out to anyone that doesn’t already know about dup3.me and trac3.me, two projects run by the staff here at SceneSource. There is also a few new things happening around the place soon, so keep an eye out.

Edit: As you can imagine, the influx of visitors from ZS has slightly overloaded our server, causing slow site loads. We are looking into upgrading, but as you can imagine these things take time to plan and implement.

The original idea came from the IRC #trace channels on various networks. These channels track uploads to the various private torrent sites around the internet, and then compare them with the other private trackers, and then tells you how they rank compared to other trackers, like a race. This would require the user to idle on the IRC channel for hours just watching text scroll by, or occasionally checking to see if something they like has been traced… not anymore!

SceneSource, in partnership with APN, have developed what we believe to be the first public “TraceDB”, where we track and store the information a normal trace channel would display and discard. We allow you to search and sort, as well as view various statistics and view the sites traced.

Anyway were having a tuff time coming up with a new hosting. So i’m basically asking you guys do you know of a place where scnsrc can call home? Not in Holland, preferably in Europe, that can handle a site like scnsrc.net. AKA needs to be able to handle DMCA’s etc. It needs to be on a minimum off 100Mbps line, 2GB RAM, quad core processor, 250GB hard drive etc. We only have abut 100 dollars a month to spend on this as we pay for this out of money from our real life jobs and as you all can probably see theirs no advertising and donations are in the little to none range.

Were not a massive site we only have about 15k uniques a day which when compared to others is small but that’s still 15k people coming here regularly and we have established a small but loyal following. We try our best in what we do and now we need a little help in return. So please if you know where we can host send us an email: info@scnsrc.net.

Sorry about the down time yesterday, and today for some people. Our PreDB was suffering a DDoS attack, which had a side effect on our main scnsrc server. Should all be resolved now thankfully and scnsrc should be back to normal.

The PreDB has gone under the knife to be revamped, rebranded and replaced. Firstly, it is no longer the “ScnSrc PreDB” but now called “DUP3″, making use of the domain http://www.dup3.me, while it can still be accessed via pre.scnsrc.net as per before. Everything under the hood has changed making it much faster and more scalable than the last one which crashed our server constantly. It has been completely redesigned visually for aesthetics, and has some improved features and functionality. The advanced search has been improved, more categories are browsable and now has a nice stats page.

Once again thank you to the people who donated, and I hope you enjoy the new PreDB. If you have any comments on the PreDB, suggestions or criticism feel free to post here in the comments.
