Die Antwoord, the eclectic South African rap posse who taught you what zef was, are back with news of a new record, Ten$ion, weirder facial hair, more stick and poke tattoos, and another kind of gross and thus infinitely rewatchable video. Ten$ion is coming February 7 via Die Antwoord’s own label, but in the meantime you can watch the video for its first single “Fok Julle Naaires,” if you’re not (spoiler alert) creeped out by large insects. It’s a typical Die Antwoord song, all impressive and incomprehensible raps (with the exception of DJ Hi-Tek’s turn at the mic towards the end, which is, um, neither of the above) from Ninja and Yo-Landi. We don’t know what “Fok Julle Naaires” means, but it sounds serious.

Florence Reece, the wife of Harlan County, Kentucky union organizer Sam Reece, penned the classic protest tune Which Side Are You On? back in 1931 and it’s never lost a touch of relevance in all the ensuing years and likely never will given the state of human nature. Pete Seeger recorded the most famous version, which you can sample on his greatest hits album from 1967, and now contemporary folkie Ani DiFranco updates the tune in a bit of perfect timing to coalesce with the Occupy Movement. ”Did you ever, as a kid, want to crawl into the speakers?” asks Nada Surf singer-guitarist Matthew Caws. ”I did–here was OK, but there was much better.” And that’s pretty much what Nada Surf is all about–Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca, and drummer Ira Elliot are in love with the way rock music can transport you to a new and wonderful place in a beguiling rush of beats, chords, hooks and words. And they do it 10 times over on their brilliant sixth album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy. Before, Nada Surf albums simply took on the character of the songs that the band came up with at the time. This one was different–there was a plan. ”We’ve always played faster and a little harder live,” Caws says, ”but we’d play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy. Just embrace it and not worry whether we’re overdoing it, kind of get all the thinking out of the way.” Chris Shaw came in to record and produce. Shaw, who’s made records with the likes of Bob Dylan, Super Furry Animals and Wilco had mixed Nada Surf’s indie hit ”Always Love,” impressing the band with his quick and expert work, not to mention his sense of humor. A few years ago, Caws met guitarist Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Death of Samantha) one night at a show, when the latter ambled over to him and offered to ”lay down some James Honeyman-Scott licks” next time they recorded. Since then Gillard has became such an integral part of the band’s sound that they invited him to play on Stars, too. The Stars has a somewhat more optimistic, more outward-looking tone than previous Nada Surf albums. On the yearning ”Waiting for Something,” Caws sings, ”This new peace/ I can feel it now,” and that serenity–and not anger–is actually what fueled the music’s extra kick. The album springs from the notion of music as an alternative reality, and songs as things you can keep by your side for inspiration and support. Which is what makes Nada Surf a truly beloved band.

Great “white hope” guitar bands come and go and the battlefield is littered with casualties (remember Mona and Viva Brother?), indeed last years hype around the Vaccines does bear similarity to the “noise” on Tribes. Equally the furrow this band is plough is not unique, anyone who listens to acts like Surfer Blood or Wales’s Joy Formidable will recognise recurring formulas. Yet to their credit Tribes have a bit more libertine swagger about them and its good to see ripped jeans, battered guitars and lots of attitude at the forefront of new music. Overall “Baby” is an album to place firmly in the glass half full bracket. True its is very derivative and you can play spot the influences for hours. But it is a confident and ebullient debut with a number of songs that are of premier division status. The trick now will be to the give the band some space and hopefully watch them grow into something more rounded and intriguing. “Baby” has faults but it could also be the start of something good.

Howler is the brainchild of 19-year-old frontman Jordan Gatesmith. Last winter, Gatesmith had been playing guitar for the Minneapolis band, Total Babe. The electrifying performances of Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson and Big Youth (as well as the man known locally as Jah Bottle Head) are legendary and highly collectable. Re-mastered for the first time on CD, three of reggae’s most accomplished recording engineers, King Tubby, Errol Thompson and Dennis Thompson, with three vocal legends (backed by Soul Syndicate Band) at the peak of their musical careers. Presented and produced by Niney The Observer, the original album was mixed by King Tubby at his famous studio on Dromilly Avenue and mastered in London at The Beatles’ Apple Studio on Saville Row. In tribute to the classic set, the CD packaging replicates the original gatefold vinyl sleeve and is complimented with an extensive booklet including an interview with Turntable club owner Winston “Merritone” Bllake. This limited edition pressing is a must have for all vintage reggae fans! A vinyl LP re-issue will follow in 2012.
