]]> The album on a whole is much more classic rock than any of Ours’ previous albums. The album’s production and composition put a much heavier emphasis on instrumentation than before. Even with a less-than-stellar production quality (one I’ll be the first to say is being overplayed by some less-than-agreeable listeners among the audience), Ballet the Boxer 1 sounds fantastic. Nothing drowns anything else out. The vocals are masterfully ranged but not too high in the mix, nor too low. The bass is strong, the drums are forceful but not bludgeoning, the guitar is fittingly melodic and even psychedelic at points, and the piano/keys lend the album that solemnity native to Ours’ compositions. The final product is a sound more mature and well-rounded than on previous releases.

]]> It’s hard not to spin The Kick and feel the only thing preventing Hir-O and Red Pill from gaining more recognition is time and an overcrowded marketplace. They already roll together as a dynamic duo in the fashion of Gang Starr or Eric B. & Rakim, and they sport names that could easily fit with 90’s rhyming superheroes. As it currently stands they’re respectable—more than solid but not yet spectacular. But even rhyming superheroes sometimes have humble beginnings, and The Kick serves as a great platform to display Red Pill and Hir-O’s growth since 2012’s Dream Within A Dream.

The Beach Boys’ version is no different, beginning at their peak with “Good Vibrations” and working (roughly) backward from 1967, picking up most of their biggest hits, whether Baroque (“Wouldn’t It Be Nice”), surf (“Surfer Girl”), or hot rod (“Little Deuce Coupe”). Even “God Only Knows” makes an appearance, not because it was a chart-topper but because its quality production and angelic vocal by Carl Wilson made it a perennial on best-of song lists for years to come. Icon is a short, sharp shot of hits from the surf titans, perfect for beginning any smart ’60s pop collection but inevitably leaving the listener wanting more of what made the Beach Boys the first or second best pop group of the decade.

]]> It s been a little more than a year since John Barrett and his punk band Bass Drum of Death put out their debut album – a year that took this kid from a sleepy Mississippi hometown (where the bars close at midnight) to performing encores in front of 5,000 screaming Europeans and playing with Hodgy Beats and Left Brain of Odd Future on live TV. Whilst on tour he always had new songs rattling around in his head and when it was time to get them out he didn t let anything get in the way, taking all-night detours to his house to conduct emergency recording sessions before heading back out on the road the following day. After touring Europe extensively and returning home with his inspiration and his instruments, Barrett spent the autumn of 2012 in his studio smashing out punk rock. This time it was just himself, lots of coffee, a Realistic reverb unit to give everything that stoned-in-outerspace feeling and for the first time in Bass Drum of Death history, a bass that he used on every track. Like his debut, GB City, Barrett recorded the entire thing on GarageBand. Bass Drum of Death s self-titled sophomore album is coming out on Innovative Leisure, the new Los Angeles label that already counts Allah-Las, Rhye, Hanni El Khatib and Nosaj Thing amidst its early successes.
