Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection is a compilation video game announced on December 13, 2010 by Square Enix. The compilation consists of remakes of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. They are both combined into one game and the game is set to be released on UMD and digital download for the PlayStation Portable, and was released in Japan on March 24, 2011. It is scheduled for release on April 19, 2011 in North America and April 22, 2011 for Europe. There is also a new playable plot element called Interlude, which bridges the gap between Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.

Features:
Players have the option of beginning with any game of their choice, including Final Fantasy IV Interlude. Final Fantasy IV will be more in-line with the original version and will not have the features or extra story sequences from the DS release. It instead retains the bonus features of the Advance release, with the post-game dungeons and party swapping.

Other features include the option of being able to switch between the original music and the DS versions during gameplay. The game contains an image gallery with videos and artwork. The gallery also includes new, never seen before images.

Changes to the The After Years include seperating Ceodore’s tale from Kain’s, which was how it was in the original mobile phone release. Ceodore and Kain’s original Challenge Dungeons are no longer merged with one another. Exclusive to this version of The After Years is a post-game boss called Lost Babil, which can be fought if the player talks with Challengeway on the True Moon. It is composed of three boss fights, which the player must assemble three parties for.

…generally, this being Legend of Heroes. The series began as an offshoot of Dragon Slayer, a massive franchise that includes Xanadu, Drasle Family and the original Sorcerian, all of which had English releases in one form or another. Legend of Heroes began as the sixth Dragon Slayer game but has since become a franchise of its own. The third through fifth games were ported to the PSP and localized by Bandai, though anyone who has played those games should NOT assume that they’re representative of what a LoH game should be. The poor localization ruined the best part of those games: the characters and story. Fortunately for us all, XSEED has done right by this franchise and given the first game in the Kiseki/Trails franchise the localization it deserves.

Oh yes, make no mistake that this is a franchise within a franchise. The four (soon to be five) games in this saga are among Falcom’s most popular, so much so that the most recent game sold out on preorders before its release date and Falcom announced an early stock price increase based on that success. The fifth game is expected to do just as well and in the meanwhile Interwise is going to the effort of producing a high-definition PC version of the fourth game for Chinese gamers.

So, what do gamers in Japan and China know that gamers overseas don’t yet? Simply that these are without hyperbole some of the best RPGs you’ll ever play and take place in what might be the most intricately detailed world to ever appear in a video game. This title takes place entirely in Liberl kingdom but don’t let that put you off. Most RPG kingdoms have a city, maybe a town or two and no particular reason for existing aside to give mapmakers something to fill in the blanks. Every city in Liberl exists for a reason and every person has a reason for living there. This is quite simply a dream game for anyone who wants to really get sucked into a world.

One reason this game has resisted translation for so long is the sheer size of the script: Over 1.5 million characters in Japanese. Your typical Final Fantasy game doesn’t even have half that. With a script that size, this game is very dialogue-heavy. While a lot of text goes into the main story, there are also a huge number of variant lines for NPCs, giving the player the sense of existing in a real and evolving world. The prologue alone has about ten different sets of dialogue for its NPCs and I encourage everyone to go and see all those variants. Not only will you learn more about the world and its inhabitants but you never know when someone will have a quest or an item, most of which are extremely time-limited.

As you might gather from the above, this game focuses very heavily on the story but that doesn’t mean the gameplay is neglected. Battles are fought on a grid, all eight characters have a unique mix of Crafts and the Orbment system allows you a measure of customization. One feature of particular note is the S-Break. When you have 100 CP or more, you gain access to powerfu S-Crafts (not all of which are offensive but all of which are useful) and you can trigger them at any time, even during an enemy turn. Doing so allows you to interrupt the turn order and provides many potential advantages. Later games in the series add even more features so if you like the system here you’ll love the later games.

As anyone who’s played the Ys games knows, Falcom does good music. Really really good music. This game is absolutely no exception. When multiple fan contests on both sides of the Pacific decide that a song from this game should occupy the #1 slot, that should tell you something. As good as Silver Will is, the rest of the soundtrack more than manages to keep up.

Being a Legend of Heroes game, the plot and characters are the heart of the game and XSEED’s translation delivers both with all the emotion they should be presented with. Rather than sing their praises I encourage everyone to check it out for themselves. The beginning is a little slow but once you get to Chapter 2 you’ll be hooked. These are not cookie-cutter characters (and if you try to mentally place them in a box, they’ll probably jump out and stomp the box) and the plot has some amazing developments, especially at the end. When the credits roll, you’ll find yourself hoping for the second game to be released yesterday. It will be a massive undertaking and I wish XSEED all the best. When you get to the end I’m sure you will too. In closing, I have three words to say about Trails in the Sky: Believe the hype.

Features

Many gameplay concepts in Valkyria Chronicles II are carried over from the original. The BLiTZ system is used during combat scenarios, splitting the action between an overhead Command Mode and third-person Action Mode. By selecting allied units during Command Mode, using Command Points in the process, said units can move and perform actions until their Action Points run out. When the player has exhausted their available Command Points, or volunteers to pass control without using all of them, the Player Phase ends and the Enemy Phase begins. This progresses back and forth until the battle’s victory conditions are achieved or the player is defeated.

Valkyria Chronicles II uses a system of multiple area maps connected by enemy encampments.When an enemy camp is captured by the player’s forces, subsequent areas are made available, using the camp as a way-point to call in reinforcements and proceed.

Also similar to the original, the characters available for use by the player each occupy a specific class. New to Valkyria Chronicles II are new class types and the ability of units to change their class based on a branching tree of upgrades. All five original classes from Valkyria Chronicles reappear, some with slight modification. Scouts, Shocktroopers, Engineers, and anti-tank Lancers act as the base units that lead to more powerful and specialized promotions. Snipers, rather than act as a starting class, are a part of the Scout’s upgrade potential. The final base class is brand new to the series.

A mysterious military force equipped with the latest weapons, called Peace Sentinels, has established a presence in Costa Rica in late 1974. The Costa Rican government cannot do anything about them because the country’s constitution bans the creation of an armed forces. The nation has secretly tapped Naked Snake and his Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers without Borders; Outer Heaven’s predecessor) mercenary group to turn back the threat, which could endanger the balance of power between the East and West.

Some changes are made to the standard Metal Gear Solid formula. Movement is done on the analog stick; actions such as co-op actions use the directional-pad; melee actions, which include multiple throws into crowds of enemies, use the R button; and weapons use the L button with the R button. Players will be unable to move while lying down, and will also have to crouch in order to pick up items. There is also an option to switch to the style of gameplay used in Portable Ops. The game itself can only be paused when the PSP is in Sleep mode instead of opening the menu.

The game will feature a heavy emphasis on co-operative gameplay, with two players in main missions and up to four players in boss missions. Players can choose one of four different Snakes with different layouts:

• Battle Dress (Armored) Snake – features heavy weapons and high defense at the expense of mobility and stealth.
• Naked Snake – moves faster and has heavy weapons at the cost of lower defense and stealth.
• Jungle Fatigues Snake – balance of stealth, speed, defense, and weapons.
• Stealth Suit Snake – design for extreme stealth at the expense of attack power.

There are several actions that can take place when two Snakes are next to each other. ‘Snake-in’ allows players to hold on to each other as one player leads the way, also allowing the Snakes to fire on the move. Other co-operative actions include holding up closing doors, performing CPR on fallen comrades, sharing items, and acting as a spotter for other players whose vision is obscured. There is an updated CQC system and a new prisoner evacuation system (using the Fulton Skyhook) along with the ability to move while crouched and the over-the-shoulder shooting view as seen in Metal Gear Solid 4.

The cardboard box used to hide from enemy soldiers now appears to have different variations, with the inclusion of a “Love Pack” (big enough for two players) and a tank design. They can also be dropped from the inventory and used as footholds to reach higher areas. Aside from the sonar system featured in Portable Ops, players will also be able to use an early version of the Soliton radar system from Metal Gear Solid. The game will feature the camouflage index system from Snake Eater, but the player will not have the ability to change camouflage uniforms as it will be entirely based on movement and position.

I think there’s a stumble here in presentation and there in clarity, but none of that detracts from making this a great portable game that PSP owners should seriously give a shot.

Co-op playbook

Army of Two: The 40th Day expands on and refines the cooperative play featured in the original game. Unlike in the original where cooperative moments were primarily predetermined at particular intervals in the game, in this sequel, players can use co-op moves at any time. The playbook allows players to scan enemies prior to engaging them in order to set up particular team-based tactics. For example, players can mock surrender or setup simultaneous sniper shots. This is in addition to using aggro as a mechanic for tactically engaging enemies in the midst of combat.

Aggro

Aggro is a system that allows two players to tactically control the target of their enemy’s attacks. Aggro is measured by a HUD element that displays which player the enemy characters are currently focusing on. By performing aggressive actions, such as firing one’s weapon, a player generates aggro and in turn causes enemies to focus more of their attention on that player. While one player has aggro the other is being ignored and as a result can then freely perform actions such as flanking. In Army of Two: The 40th Day, additional non-aggressive actions can affect aggro. For example, by performing a mock-surrender the enemy combatants will focus all of their attention (and aggro) on the player that is surrendering.

Morality moments

In Army of Two: The 40th Day players are forced to make moral decisions that affect the story of the game. At pre-determined points in the game players will be presented with a choice, for example whether they should overtake a security guard and steal weapons or vacate the premises. The decision is not a vote between two players. but instead either player must decide while the other player is forced to accept the ramifications of that decisions regardless of what their preference was. The outcome and presentation of these morality moments takes the form of comic panels created by the popular artists Chris Bachalo and Jock.
