Here’s an album by a fairly unknown songwriter and singer, Rocky Votolato. A former member of the moderately successful indie-folk band, Waxwing, Votolato’s been quietly involved in the Northwest music scene for 15 years now, but he still sounds fundamentally the same. His last two full-lengths, 2006’s Makers and 2007’s The Brag and Cuss, didn’t radically alter the formula, but they were reliable, accessible folk-rock efforts. But on True Devotion, his sixth solo full length release, the singer-songwriter sounds like he’s given up the journey and settled down.. The secret in best experiencing the music on The Stormy Petrel lies in just exactly how much a listener wants to put in to the album. It’s not that the album is emotionally vacant but, rather, a listener is capable of projecting themselves into the music and it will, in turn, comfort them, console them, soothe nerves, raise adrenaline, coax them, cajole them, incite them or disarm them and more – each possibility being totally dependent upon what that listener brought in with them on their way through the front door.

Synopsis: Three young people try to pitch a new technology for communication to a large cellular company in order to receive funding to further test their product. Upon rejection from that company, one of the three makes the rash decision to test the products on themselves. Upon the initial test, the new technology seems to work fine, but soon after the three discover that the technology has a ‘Glitch’. The story revolves around the effects of the glitch, which seem to give some of the friends ‘super’ powers or abilities. Eventually, it turns into a battle with inventor of the technology against the other two friends in a fight against good and evil.
